The Bahamas Hybrid Center offers renewable electricity and renewable mobility combined with food production, all coupled to a one-site training programme – a very unique concept.
The German companies SUNfarming GmbH and bioltec systems GmbH , in cooperation with the Bahamian company 700 Islands Energy, have set up a hybrid center for renewable energies at the Windsor High School in Albany, Nassau. This project is part of the worldwide dena Renewable Energy Solutions Programme coordinated by the Deutsche Energie-Agentur (dena) – the German Energy Agency – and supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) within the German Energy Solutions Initiative.
More than 40 political, business and university guests attended the opening ceremony on the campus of Windsor High School.
After the opening speech by Peter Schrum, company founder and main shareholder of SUNfarming, guests had the opportunity to visit the center, accompanied by knowledgeable experts who gladly answered all questions.
In this Hybrid Center, a greenhouse with roof integrated photovoltaic panels, electricity is generated from sunlight, while vegetables, fruits, flowers or medicinal herbs are grown indoors with high yield. The integration of renewable energy into a combined heat and power plant generates electricity and hot water at the same time. A smart grid management system makes the power together with a battery storage as a 24/7 stand-alone solution and / or grid-connected. Electric and fuel vehicles clearly demonstrate renewable mobility.
At the same time, SUNfarming and bioltec are striving to promote climate and resource protection, to shorten regional value chains, to provide energy, to create jobs and ultimately to increase the quality of life sustainably. The competencies of both companies have been integrated into the design. Demonstration, training, application and technology transfer of proven leading-edge technologies are the keywords for this “Bahamian – German Hybrid Center”. In addition, it provides the foundation for future collaborative research and development, including business models for commercial applications. The partners bring together different systems integration technologies, whether for off grid or grid-connected applications that are adaptable to local conditions and customer needs.
Technical and agriculture teaching staff of the correctional services from all over South Africa attended the course.
„The participants were very satisfied with the course and some even stated that it was one of the best courses they attended and the wish there was more of these types of training. They feel now they will be able to make a big difference when going back to home/work,“ says Faure van Schalkwyk, Energy Research Engineer & Trainer.
Xoli Phillips recommends SUNfarming Food & Energy:
“Food & Energy is an excellent opportunity our youth must grap with both hands. It is the best training I have ever attended. Training was so exciting and prepared us for the future. Thanks to all the facilitators who made the training so easy to understand. So professional and well versed with the course. It is much appreciated…keep up the excellent work.”
(Erkner/Berlin, 30 August 2018) On the sun terrace of the Estrel in Berlin, the largest hotel in Europe, SUNfarming has built its solar greenhouse at a height of 50 m. The greenhouse, which is covered by a 4 m wide light dome, has a size of approx. 42, 5m ² (5m x 8, 5m). The rooftops east and west of the light dome are equipped with SUNfarming modules, the generated solar power is used directly by the hotel.
The plant is used by SUNfarming GmbH as a model of larger SF Food & Energy plants and SF Urban Farming in Germany in order to present project partners, politicians and financial partners, including ambassadors from African States, SF Food & Energy in a practical manner. Under the partial shading of the greenhouse, a micro-climate with low evaporation is formed; This favours the growth of different types of vegetables as hydroponics. Irrigation is carried out by means of a water-saving drip irrigation. This makes it possible to cultivate plants at otherwise barren sites – such as house roofs or in resource-poor areas (crisis regions, developing countries).
Kitchen director Peter Griebel harvests fresh and regional organic vegetables and herbs for his restaurant kitchens. At present, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, blueberries, chilies, bavarian figs and medicinal herbs are mainly harvested here.
On August 29th the project was inaugurated during the course of a rooftop party. Numerous guests from politics and business had followed the joint invitation of SUNfarming and Estrel and had the opportunity to visit the solar greenhouse, accompanied by specialized experts who were happy to answer all the questions.
In his opening speech, hotel director Thomas Brückner highlights the great interest of the Estrel hotel in healthy organic food products and its own spice production in cooperation with SUNfarming.
In his address, Peter Schrum, the main shareholder and founder of the SUNfarming Group, emphasizes the wide range of possible applications and possibilities for development policy: “The advantages for citizens and municipalities are endless. SUNfarming Urban Farming Plus contributes to the regional supply of cities. This project offers a wide participation of the municipalities with long-term ownership, sustainable food and energy production and job security with a strong training component also for schools and research institutions “.
Internationally, the SUNfarming multi-purpose light domes can make an important development policy contribution to the elimination of escape causes. With these projects, we not only save resources, but also create knowledge resources for the future through educational offerings”, concludes Peter Schrum.

Job creation, food production and self-sufficiency are objectives that SUNfarming has set itself to combat the causes of migration and flight.
Peter Schrum, founder and principal shareholder of the SUNfarming Group, visited various African countries during his trip abroad in February. The agenda included Namibia, Zambia, South Africa, Tanzania and Mauritius. Together with presidents, ministers and stakeholders, the potential of the Food & Energy projects was discussed for job creation, self-sufficiency in regionally grown food and solar energy production. Talks were also held with representatives from Ethiopia and Senegal and project-preparatory steps were initiated.
Peter Schrum:“Global warming is increasing, which has a devastating effect especially in already arid and drought affected areas in Africa. The result are major refugees flows, our aim is to create help for self-help for the people in their home countries. Our agro-solar greenhouses can produce food even in arid areas with water savings of up to 90%. The solar modules installed on the roof of the greenhouses produce electricity that can be used in the communities. It will create up to 1000 new jobs, including 500 franchise partner, in 10 years per MW/2ha”.
Our title photo shows Peter Schrum with the President of Mauritius Mrs. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim and members of SUNfarming in the government building in Port Louis.
More than 11 million kilowatt hours of electricity are produced by the two solar parks with a total capacity of 6.64 megawatts a year. The Co2 savings are around 8,300 tonnes annually.
3,358 kWp were completed in the Aegean province of Denizli and 3,279 kWp in the Anatolian province of Kayseri. The major projects were implemented by SUNfarming Eurasia. Commissioning took place in December 2017.
Denizli has about 1 million inhabitants. The province is located about 200 km from the Turkish Aegean coast and is known for its healing waters and thermal baths. The economy of the region consists mainly of the textile industry and winegrowing. The project was developed by the SUNfarming Eurasia team, the property with 69.100m2 is the property of SUNfarming Eurasia.
Kayseri is located about 280 km south-east of the capital Ankara and has about 1.2 million inhabitants.
Develi, a suburb of Kayseri, has about 60,000 inhabitants and lies behind the Erciyes Mountains. The land was leased to 30 years, with a 10-year extension option.
With solar radiation of around 1,600 kWh / kWp in Kayseri and 1,660 kWh / kWp in Denizli, both regions offer the best solar yield for the production of renewable energy and make a global contribution to climate protection.
We are very excited!
